She was a superlative low-to-medium altitude air superiority aircraft, excelling in close combat and the master of any Messerschmitt Bf 109 or Focke Wulf Fw 190 in such a dogfight.

History

The La-5FN played a major role in wresting German control of the air over the Eastern Front.  The technological advantages that the Luftwaffe had over the VVS in the early part of the war were soon negated by the next generation of Soviet aircraft, one of which was the La-5FN. Affectionately nicknamed "Lavochka" by its pilots, the La-5FN gave the VVS pilots a great confidence boost.

The La-5FN differed from the earlier Lavochkin designs in this line by the adoption of the more powerful M-82FN engine. This strong fuel-injected engine had an output of 1850 HP at low altitude, but its best performance could only be achieved below 10,000 feet. The La-5FN also had a very short endurance and no provision for drop tanks. Neither of these factors were too much of a handicap for the VVS because they tended to fly from bases very close to the front and at low altitude in the tactical support role.

The La-5FN in Aces High

The La-5FN is a dangerous opponent for any plane at low altitudes. With good speed, climb, and maneuverability, it is an entertaining plane to fly when the fights are low.

The La-5FN has a split flap that can be deflected 60 degrees. For takeoff, 20 degrees of flaps is the recommended setting.

The fuel system consists 3 self-sealing tanks in the wings and fuselage totaling 122 gallons. There are no provisions to carry external fuel tanks. Because of its very short endurance, fuel must be managed carefully.

The La-5FN carries an armament of two synchronized 20mm ShVAK cannons mounted in the cowling with 200 rounds per gun. The primary trigger fires the both cannons. Underwing bomb racks can allow two 50kg bombs to be carried.

Markings

The LA-5FN in Aces High carries the markings of Major Ivan Kozhedub. Major Kozhedub was the highest scoring Soviet and Allied ace with 62 victories, including a Me 262. He was awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union three times. Major Kozhedub scored all his victories flying the La-5's and La-7's. During the Korean War, he went on to command a division of Soviet MiG-15s although it is unknown for certain whether he flew any missions.
