In April 1944, Soviet forces launched a major offensive into Crimea, quickly breaking through Axis lines and forcing a retreat toward Sevastopol. Despite Hitler's orders to hold the peninsula, Axis commanders began evacuating troops via the port city under “Operation 60,000,” relying heavily on the Romanian Navy. Axis air defense, limited to a handful of Bf 109G squadrons and outdated Romanian fighters, faced overwhelming Soviet air superiority from the 4th and 8th Air Armies and the Black Sea Fleet Air Force. Between April 15 and May 14, over 130,000 Axis troops were evacuated before Sevastopol fell. This FSO simulates the intense air battles over the retreating front and evacuation convoys in the Black Sea.
