Today we turn our attention to the Lorraine American Cemetery and Memorial in Saint-Avold, Moselle, France. The cemetery and memorial covers 113.5 acres and has 10,489 graves, making it the largest such World War 2 American cemetery in Europe. Most of the dead buried there died in late 1944 as Americans attempted to dislodge the German army from the Siegfried Line, and most of them were part of the U.S. Third and Seventh Armies. Famous Americans buried there include Al Blozis, Willard Bowsky, Salvador Lara, Andrew Miller, George Preddy and David Waybur.
The cemetery consists of nine separate burial plots that are arranged in an elliptical design rolling across beautiful land in eastern Lorraine. The memorial stands on a plateau west of the burial area. It has large ceramic operations maps and service flags flying high. On the front wall is the figurine of St. Nabor, a Roman soldier who is a martyr. On each side of the memorial the Tablets of the Missing stretch with 444 names on them, and the entire memorial and cemetery is framed by woodlands. The American Battle Monuments Commission administers this site and all other European memorials, and all are on land permanently bequeathed to the United States in honor of those who gave their lives for freedom.
