By the end of the hostilities Great Britain showed casualties and losses of 544 aircrew killed and 1,547 aircraft destroyed; Germany showed 2,698 aircrew killed, 967 captured, and 1,887 aircraft destroyed. But the bigger picture showed a major defeat for the German command which to that point seemed to be invincible.
