In so many ways, the Battle of Britain was a game-changing battle which occurred early in World War II. Had the outcome been different how might the war have changed? We will never know the answer to that question but what we do know is the Battle of Britain stopped Germany’s momentum and gave new hope to millions of Europeans in the early stages of the war.

The Battle of Britain was an air campaign fought between July 10th and October 31st, 1940, between the German Luftwaffe and the United Kingdom. Germany’s objective was to gain superiority over the airspace of Britain and the British Royal Air Force, thus paving the way for what was hoped would be an airborne and amphibious invasion of Great Britain. The failure of Germany to do so was considered a major defeat and completely changed the objectives in years to come.

At the beginning of the battle Great Britain had 1,963 serviceable aircraft fighting against 2,550 aircraft for Germany. Germany originally targeted coastal shipping centers and ships, then shifted its attention to aircraft factories and airfields. When those failed Germany shifted to terror bombing tactics and attempted to bomb areas of political significance in hopes of shattering the will of the British.

Under the spirited leadership of Winston Churchill, Great Britain won a decisive victory in the battle. By the end of the hostilities Great Britain showed casualties and losses of 544 aircrew killed and 1,547 aircraft destroyed; Germany showed 2,698 aircrew killed, 967 captured, and 1,887 aircraft destroyed. But the bigger picture showed a major defeat for the German command which to that point seemed to be invincible. After the Battle of Britain German leadership had to completely alter their European plans and psychologically they no longer appeared to be an unbeatable foe.

It is through a complete understanding of battles like this that the students of World War II who make up the fine staff at HiTech Creations gain their inspiration in designing Aces High, the leader among combat simulators on the market today.
