The Battle of the Coral Sea, fought between Japan and forces from the United States and Australia, was contested between May 4-8, 1942, and was the first battle in which aircraft carriers engaged each other; in another first it was the first battle in naval history where none of the ships fired upon each other.

In May of 1942 Japan decided to strengthen its defensive position by invading and occupying islands in the Solomon Island chain. Unfortunately for the Japanese the United States learned of this plan by intercepting radio transmissions and two Navy carrier task forces along with an Australian task force were sent to stop the Japanese offensive.

What ensued was four days of constant barrage as aircraft sank ships and crippled other aircraft. When the battle had finally ended by both sides withdrawing from the area, the United States had lost 69 aircraft, 4 ships and 656 men and Japan had lost 92 aircraft, 9 ships and 966 men were killed.

Considered a tactical victory for the Japanese, the Battle of the Coral Sea was a very costly victory indeed and it ended up crippling the Japanese navy to the extent that it was too weak in the Battle of Midway which happened one month later, and ultimately this defeat led to the defeat in the entire Pacific Theater. As so often is the case, the effects of a military encounter can be short-term but ultimately long term and it is often the long term effects that lead to overall victory or defeat.
