For those history buffs out there we bring you January 3, 1945: on this date Douglas MacArthur and Chester Nimitz were given new commands. MacArthur was given command of all ground troops in the Pacific Theater and Nimitz was given command of the entire naval fleet.
These promotions were in preparation for operations against Iwo Jima, Okinawa and eventually mainland Japan.
