At Aces High we are all about history.  Let’s face it, our game is based on World War II, so how silly would it be if we were not students of history?  How could we ever make our combat flight simulator life-like and accurate if we did not study everything about World War 2?

We hope you have been following along as we show a timeline of the individual months during WWII and give you highlights of what happened during those months.  Maybe these WW2 timelines can help you gain a better perspective about the massive worldwide effort that occurred during the 1940’s.

With that out of the way, today we want to highlight December, 1943

• 2^nd Germany conducts a successful air raid on Bari, Italy.  The bombing hit some mustard gas canisters, killing 83 soldiers, and all told there were 1000 casualties.
• 3^rd Edward R. Murrow delivers his “Orchestrated Hell” broadcast, telling about the RAF bombing raid over Berlin.
• 4^th Bolivia declares war on all Axis Powers.
• 4^th In Yugoslavia, Marshal Tito proclaims a democratic Yugoslavian government in exile.
• 12^th Rommel is appointed head of “Fortress Europe” and is now chief planner against an expected Allied offensive in 1944.
• 13^th German soldiers complete the Massacre of Kalavryta in southern Greece.
• 13^th U.S. VIII Corps arrives in Europe.
• 14^th U.S. XV Corps arrives in Europe.
• 16^th Russia takes back Kalinin.
• 24^th Eisenhower becomes Supreme Allied Commander in Europe.
• 26^th German battleship Scharnhorst is sunk off North Cape in Arctic Ocean.
• 26^th American Marines land on Cape Cloucester, New Britain.
• 27^th General Eisenhower is names Head of Overloard, or the Invasion of Normandy.
• 28^th China has success against Japan in Burma.
• 29^th Japan hands over control of Andaman Islands to Azad Hind.

You may have noticed that this was a slow month for activity.  The main reason for that, of course, is the fact that it was the dead of winter in Europe.  Extreme cold and horrible weather conditions make it very hard to move troops and supplies; so much of the war activity consists of planning and strategizing, as well as re-stocking supplies.  As the snows melt and the temperatures improve in March, troop activity increased greatly.

Last week we told you about December, 1941, so let’s flash forward a year and take you on a tour of December, 1942.  Activity during a war tends to diminish in December for obvious reasons….winter has set in and conditions are usually horrible.  The men can, of course, fight in any weather, but moving equipment in snow and mud is not conducive for fast troop movement.  Since much of WW2 was fought in areas where there was definitely a winter, then we saw much less activity.

• 1sth U.S. cruiser Northampton is sunk by Japanese near Guadalcanal.
• 2^nd Heavy fighting in Tunisia.
• 4^th U.S. begin bombing of Naples, Italy.
• 6^th RAF bombs the Netherlands
• 7^th the USS New Jersey, America’s largest battleship, is launched on the first anniversary of Pearl Harbor.
• 9^th Marines turn over Guadalcanal to U.S. Army
• 12^th Rommel retreats to Tripoli.
• 12^th Germans try to break through to forces trapped in Stalingrad in Operation Winterstorm
• 13^th Luftwaffe flies in supplies to troops trapped in Stalingrad
• 15^th America pushes Japan out of Buna, New Guinea.
• 15^th U.S. battles Japan in Battle of the Gifu
• 22^nd U.S. 1^st Armored Division arrives in North Africa for Operation Husky
• 24^th French Admiral Darlan, former Vichy leader, is assassinated.
• 25^th American bombs Rabaul
• 26^th Heavy fighting continues at Guadalcanal
• 31^st Battle of the Barents Sea

The end of 1942 was somewhat of a turning point for the Allies. Rommel is trapped, Germany is trapped, and Japan is getting ready to abandon Guadalcanal, all positive signs for the Allies.  The truly dark days of WW2 are over for the Allied Forces, and the momentum has shifted in their way.
