• 2^nd The Battle of Empress begins between U.S. and Japan
• 5^th Italians bomb the Vatican
• 6^th Red Army liberates the city of Kiev.
• 9^th Allies take Castiglione, Italy
• 9^th General De Gaulle becomes President of French Committee of National Liberation.
• 11^th Americans continue to bomb Rabaul
• 12^th Germans overrun British on Dodecanese Islands off coast of Turkey.
• 15^th Allied Expeditionary Force for invasion of Europe is formed
• 16^th Battle of Leros ends with surrender of British and Italian forces.
• 16^th Japanese submarine sinks USA submarine Corvina near Truk
• 18^th 440 Royal Air Force planes bomb Berlin
• 20^th Battle of Tarawa begins; U.S. Marines land on Tarawa and Makin in the Gilbert Islands
• 22^nd The Cairo Conference between Roosevelt, Churchill, and Chiang Kai-Shek is held in Cairo.
• 24^th heavy bombing of Berlin continues
• 25^th Americans and Japanese fight the naval Battle of Cape St. George
• 25^th Rangoon is bombed by U.S.
• 27^th The Casablanca Conference end.
• 28^th The Tehran Conference begins to discuss war strategy

What a fascinating month of the war.  You can see the strategies playing out and all sides move pieces like a chess game, except the chess board is a map of the world.  Just the logistics of moving supplies, aircraft, ships, and tanks around the board where they are needed must have been an enormous responsibility.  Add to that the sheer numbers that we are talking about, and how difficult it is to move hundreds of thousands of men and supplies from one point to the next….and then the continual stream of information that has to be digested and acted upon….yes, this was a fascinating war indeed!
