JG11 in Aces High[edit]

Created in January, 2006, JG11 is the only "all Luftwaffe, all the time" squadron in Aces High. Whether it's squad night or not, members of JG11 fly only Luftwaffe fighters in the Main Arena.

JG 11 flies as Knights in the Main Arenas. Our squad night is every Tuesday night. We meet in the Training Arena beginning at 8:00 pm EST for some warm up and move to the main arena at 8:30 pm EST. We enjoy a good turnout of squad members and conduct air operations as a unit. We welcome anyone who wishes to learn more about us to fly a few sorties as a guest, check out our squad website, leave a message in the JG11 Recruiting Thread on the Aces High Bulletin Board, or send our Geschwaderkommodore, Stampf, a PM either in the arena or on the Aces High Bulletin Board.

JG11 Sonderstaffel is also a long time participant in the Friday Night Squadron Ops. We always volunteer to fly for the Axis side whether the scenario is European or Pacific, but we happily fulfill any mission assigned to us by the CMs.

Like the Luftwaffe geschwaders of World War II, JG11 is organized into three groups, or "Gruppen". I/JG11 is the Main Arena group and that is the squad name you will find us listed under on the Aces High Squad Listing for the Main Arenas. II/JG11 is the Axis vs. Allies gruppe, and III/JG11 flies Friday Squad Operations (FSO) and other events in the Special Events Arenas. Each group consists of two flights, or "Staffeln": Weiß (White) Staffel and Schwarz (Black) Staffel. Weiß Staffel primarily flies the Focke-Wulf FW-190 series of aircraft while Schwarz Staffel flies the Messerschmitt Bf-109 series; mirroring the historic mixed Geschwader. While most members of JG11 are members of all 3 gruppen, it is not a requirement. We have several members of III/JG11 (the FSO gruppe) who are members of other Main Arena squads.

JG11 in World War II[edit]

Jagdgeschwader 11 was formed on April 1, 1943 from two existing Gruppen. The Bf109s of I/JG1 became II/JG11 while the Fw190s of III/JG1 became I/JG11. A new Gruppen was formed from scratch and became III/JG11 and was assigned Bf109s. The allied bomber offensive was reaching a crescendo and JG11 was needed to bolster the defense of the Reich. The Gruppen were initially placed along the north German coast between Holland and Denmark.

The unit was to participate in several firsts in air combat. They were the first to use air to air bombs against the American bombers. They were also the first to use the 21 cm rockets carried under the wings of their planes. These were to be launched from outside the range of the defensive fire of the bombers. These both became a hindrance with the appearance of longer range escort fighters.

Along with other Jagdgeschwader’s JG11 participated in the defense of France after the Allied invasion of Operation Overlord.

On January 1, 1945 JG11 participated in Operation Bodenplatte, the New Years Day attack by the Luftwaffe against Allied airfields in Belgium and Holland. The attack was a massive low level mission by several Geschwader’s. JG11’s target was the airfield near Asch Belgium, designated Y-29 by the Allies. The field was defended by the 352nd Fighter Group and 366th Fighter Group. A Squadron of the 366th was already airborne and heading to attack German ground targets in the Bulge. Another Squadron, this one from the 352nd was idling on the runway as JG11 approached. The 352nd was able to get all 12 aircraft off the ground. A large dogfight occurred at low altitude over the base and surrounding terrain. JG11 suffered heavily in the attack, with the loss of 24 planes and 22 aircrew for a claim of 11 Allied aircraft brought down. This battle was the topic of an episode of Dogfights on the History Channel.

The Gruppen of the Jagdgeschwader were to serve on both the Western and Eastern fronts. On January 23, 1945 the Jagdgeschwader was redeployed to the Eastern Front. A large Russian offensive had begun 11 days earlier. From this time until their final surrender, JG11 was to score in excess of 350 kills.

A small group of pilots, 20 in number, were assigned as a Berlin Defense Staffel in late April. They had 6 Fw-190s based at Tempelhof.

JG11 surrendered to the British at Leck Airfield on May 7, 1945.
