As the Pacific War neared its end, Japan made a final desperate stand at Okinawa, mobilizing all available forces to delay an inevitable invasion of the home islands. They faced the overwhelming power of the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Fleet, which included dozens of carriers, battleships, cruisers, and destroyers, supported by up to 1,100 aircraft. In a last-ditch effort, Japan launched massive Kamikaze (suicide) attacks, hoping to replicate the mythical Divine Wind that once repelled Mongol invaders. Though these attacks caused significant U.S. losses—damaging or sinking 147 ships and killing 4,582 sailors—they failed to stop Japan’s defeat.
