The dilemma
There are, literally, hundreds of games to choose from when buying a video game, be it an online game or a game played on a console. With so many choices, how does one choose? It’s like seeing a litter of puppies, all adorable faces, all licking you with love, all promising to be your best friend for life. How can you make that kind of decision?
We can’t help you in picking out a puppy, but we at HiTech Creations know a thing or two about quality games. For twenty-four years we have produced our own Aces High, the best combat simulator on the market. As you might suspect, with that much experience, we have an opinion regarding what to look for in a game.
Factors to consider
These, then, are what we consider to be the most important factors to consider before laying down some bread for a game:
- Price: Consider the cost of the game, especially during holiday sales.
- Publisher: Look at the publisher, especially in the age of microtransactions.
- Update Cadence: Understand that no game is perfect upon release.
- Genre: Decide what genre of games you're interested in.
- Reviews: Read game reviews and watch gameplay videos.
- Specifications: Check if your system meets the game's requirements.
- Age rating: Be aware of the age-appropriate content.
- Platform: Choose between different platforms (e.g., PC, console, mobile).
Let’s look at each of these in a bit more detail.
Any discussion about purchasing any retail product always includes price. Unless your name is Bill Gates or Elon Musk, price will be a consideration. What can you afford to pay, or what are you willing to pay? Look for great deals during Christmas time; buy one for a relative and buy one for yourself, of course. Take advantage of those holiday sales.
Who is the publisher? What experience do they have? Read the industry reviews about publishers. Some fly-by-night companies are not to be bothered with, quite frankly. Go with experience!
We absolutely guarantee that no game is its best when it first comes out. With our flight sim game, Aces High, we are constantly improving it and releasing new versions. This is true of all reputable games, so find out when they last tinkered/improved their game.
The genre is easy enough to find out; make sure it is a genre you like playing.
Reviews are everywhere, it seems. Check out the number of reviews given. Ten? Hardly what we would call a good sample? Two hundred? Now we’re talking a good sample to judge by.
Check the specifications to make sure that your PC can meet the game requirements. Almost all computers made in the last five years can match the gaming requirements of all games sold but, still, it is worth taking the time to find out.
Age rating will be important to parents who are buying a game for their children. It should be stamped on the game package or appear on the website of the gaming company.
And, finally, what is the platform for that game. Our own combat flight simulator is for PCs only; some games are offered for PCs and for consoles. Just double check to make sure you are buying the right game/right platform.
Follow those suggestions and you should be happy with whatever purchase you make.
