WWII History

Little known fact: MIT computer technicians developed the first video game way back in 1962, but it wasn’t until the mid-Seventies that the first home computer game was developed.

Since then it is safe to say that the gaming world has exploded with many options. If you are a gamer, or a gamer-to-be, you will not suffer from a lack of games to try, with the possibilities at your disposal easily numbering in the thousands.

Which leads us to this question: what genres are there in gaming? How many different types of games are available? We will tackle that question in this article by HiTech Creations, the developers of Aces High, one of the leading combat simulators since our inception in 2000. If you like your action fast and furious, you will love our flight sim game, Aces High.

Various gaming categories

Here are the major categories of gaming available to gamers:

  • Role-Playing Games (RPGs)
  • Sports Games
  • Racing/Simulation
  • Real-time Strategy (RTS)
  • Sandbox
  • Casual and Idle Games
  • Puzzle Games
  • Turn-based Strategy (TBS)
  • Action-Adventure

That is all well and good, but if we were to list the subcategories, it would easily number over fifty.

Pay close attention

Within those major categories/genres, you will quickly notice there is overlap for many games. Our own Aces High falls under Simulation, Strategy, and Action-Adventure, and the same can be said for almost all games available to the public.

To cut through the confusion, we give this description of our combat flight simulator on our website:

Aces High takes the art and science of vintage WW1 and WW2 air combat and sets it in a high intensity online multiplayer environment.  Hundreds of players simultaneously battle it out against each other in massive aerial dogfights and bomber raids.

High fidelity flight simulation is the heart of Aces High but it doesn't end there.  A war rages on the ground and at sea.  Engage enemy armor in tank combat.  Protect your fleet as a gunner or make a torpedo run in a PT boat.  Lead an assault in an amphibious vehicle.  With over 100 warbirds, vehicles, and boats available, you have access to a vast virtual arsenal.

Still confused?

We don’t blame you if this “genre” question confuses you, and we certainly understand that you will want more information before you pay your hard-earned money for a game. That is why we always suggest that gamers sample a game before playing it.

Wait a second! Sample a game? Is that even possible?

It is with our Aces High flight simulator action game. We offer a free two-week download of Aces High, no credit card required. As long as your computer system has the basic hardware needed to play our game, and 99% of computers do, then you can simply download our game and have full access to the game for a full two weeks.

To our way of thinking that is the only way any gamer can truly determine if they will have fun playing that game. In fact, we are a bit surprised more gaming companies do not make a similar offer.

We at HiTech Creations, makers of Aces High combat flight simulator, have access to the same statistics and gaming information that you have, so we thought we would share some interesting gaming statistics which came out recently.

What does it all mean?

Well, other than the fact that gaming is obviously a very popular way to pass the time, we are not sure what it all means. And really, does it need to mean more? Is it necessary to always have in-depth discussions about things like this? We all have twenty-four hours in each day, 365 days in each year, and we all spend those hours and days doing what we enjoy doing (with the possible exception of our jobs, of course). We can take more surveys and develop more postulates about it all, but really, we at HiTech Creations would prefer to just kick back and play our exciting flight sim game, Aces High.

Have you tried Aces High?

If you are new to parenting, and your child is old enough to play video games, we have some information about gaming we believe you need to know. We are HiTech Creations, and back in 2000 we introduced our online, exciting  combat simulator, Aces High. We’ve been going strong ever since, and with twenty-four years of gaming experience, we feel we have seen enough to qualify as, for lack of a better term, experts in the field of gaming.

Thus, we have a few things worth noting, things which will hopefully help you as you traverse the mine field that is parenting.

A recent study

A recent study of American adolescents reported that eighty-six percent gamed, with 32.9 percent gaming about every day and 24.9 percent gaming about every week (Giordano et al., 2022). A substantial number of adolescents in the study also reported watching other people gaming; almost one-quarter (25%) of participants said they watch others game about every day (Giordano et al., 2022).

Given the popularity of gaming among adolescents, parents are often left asking questions like “Is my child’s gaming a problem?” “How much gaming is too much gaming?” and “How do I keep them safe?” Below are important considerations and suggestions for parents of children or teens who game.

What to look out for

  1. Do your homework on the games they play. What is its rating (e.g., Everyone, Teen, Mature)? Be informed about violent content, about sexualcontent, and about foul language in the game. Check if players can interact with each other ( a mine field) and if in-game purchases can be made.
  2. Know how to use parental controls.Gaming companies have been working to address harassment, hostility, and safety issues. There are now many ways parents can control how their child games, such as managing communication between players, enforcing time limits, restricting access based on the rating of the game, and limiting or prohibiting spending money on the game.

Parents need to consider their options and make informed choices. For example, do you want your child to communicate with all the other players? Only communicate with approved players? Or no communication with others at all? Do you want your child to be able to spend real currency on the game? If so, how much? How long do you want your child to play in one sitting?

  1. Understand the risks of gaming, like player toxicity.Gaming is not all good or all bad; it has potential benefits and potential risks. It is important for parents to be aware of all of them to make informed decisions. For example, one potential risk in multiplayer online games is hostility or toxicity in player interactions.
  2. Understand the risks of gaming, like predators.Another risk of online gaming or multiplayer gaming is the reality that some individuals enter virtual spaces with the intent of harm. Without creating undo fear, it is important for parents to help foster common sense among their children and teens, help them to be “street smart.” For example, parents can teach children about online masquerading, in which a person presents themself as someone they are not (e.g., an adult masquerading as a child).

Final thoughts

Obviously, we think gaming is a wonderful thing, pretty much what you would expect from a game manufacturer. However, we are also very aware of the problems associated with gaming and, as parents ourselves, we are aware of the problems parents face.

When in doubt, be vigilant.
